Cambodia's Tire Industry Rise

Cambodia is rapidly emerging as a crucial player in the global tire supply chain, leveraging its abundant rubber resources and significant cost advantages. Its performance is particularly strong in exports to the United States, and this Southeast Asian nation is accelerating its transformation into a major supply base for key global tire consumer markets.

Capitalizing on its resource endowments and favorable policies, Cambodia is attracting an increasing number of international tire companies, and its industrial influence is continuously strengthening.

Rubber resources are the foundation of Cambodia's tire industry. As a typical tropical country, Cambodia experiences an average annual temperature exceeding 25°C and annual rainfall between 1500 and 2000 millimeters. Combined with its deep red soil, this provides ideal growing conditions for rubber trees. The resulting natural rubber is characterized by high purity, low impurities, and strong abrasion resistance, making it an ideal raw material for manufacturing high-quality tires.

According to statistics from the General Department of Rubber under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia, the total rubber plantation area in the country has reached 425,000 hectares, of which 330,000 hectares are tappable, forming a large-scale supply capacity.

With the rapid expansion of the local tire processing industry, more and more natural rubber is being processed locally. This not only shortens the transportation radius of raw materials but also significantly reduces procurement costs, further solidifying the foundation of the industrial chain.

Cost advantages have injected strong momentum into the tire industry. Regarding labor costs, in 2024, the basic wage for Cambodian workers was only US$204 per month, far lower than in China and some Southeast Asian countries, significantly reducing labor costs for enterprises.

Logistics and manufacturing costs are also competitive: industrial clusters, represented by Svay Rieng province, are less than 200 kilometers from both Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh ports, shortening the natural rubber transportation radius by more than 30% compared to the past, and reducing the overall cost of raw materials and logistics by approximately 8% to 10%.

Currently, the total cost of local rubber is approximately RMB 10,500 per ton. Combined with preferential investment policies, this makes tire companies' overall operating costs highly cost-effective, continuously enhancing the international competitiveness of their products.

Driven by these dual advantages, Cambodia's tire exports have experienced explosive growth, especially in the US market. In 2025, Cambodia exported 13.4 million passenger car tires to the United States, a year-on-year increase of 50.6%, surpassing Vietnam to become the third largest source of replacement passenger car tires imported by the US, with its market share rising from 6.27% in 2024 to 9.25%.

Overall, Cambodia's tire export revenue in 2025 was approximately US$1.38 billion, a year-on-year increase of 57.86%. Entering 2026, the export momentum continued, with January exports exceeding US$159 million, a sharp increase of 71% compared to the same period in 2025.

The continued influx of tire companies is constantly expanding Cambodia's production capacity. As of early 2026, nine Chinese-funded tire and rubber-related companies had established operations in Cambodia, seven of which were already in production, forming a preliminary industrial cluster. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, two companies announced factory construction—Shandong Yongyu Rubber completed the filing for its Cambodian project, planning to produce 600,000 high-performance tire vulcanizing capsules annually.

Triangle Tyre also announced an investment of 3.219 billion yuan to build a production base. With new projects coming online, Cambodia's annual tire production capacity is expected to increase to 65 million units, potentially doubling its global supply capacity and further solidifying its position in the global supply chain.

Currently, Cambodia has become a crucial foothold for Chinese tire companies to circumvent trade barriers and expand into international markets. Leveraging the US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) treatment for Cambodia, locally produced tires exported to the US enjoy zero tariffs, resulting in a landed overall cost reduction of approximately 25% compared to China.

In the future, with the continuous release of industrial cluster effects and the sustained improvement of rubber processing capabilities, Cambodia is expected to further unleash its industrial potential and grow into an indispensable and important supply base in the global tire market.
