Semi-Steel vs All-Steel Radial Tires

Radial tires are named for their cord arrangement, which resembles the meridians of the Earth. Compared to traditional bias-ply tires, radial tires offer significant advantages in handling stability and durability, and are now widely used in various types of motor vehicles.

As two core categories within the radial tire family, semi-steel radial tires and all-steel radial tires, despite both being radial structures, differ significantly in material composition, performance, and application scenarios, catering to different vehicle needs. Clarifying these differences helps in making more accurate choices during actual vehicle selection.

The fundamental difference lies in their structure and materials. Semi-steel radial tires employ a composite structure of "fiber carcass + steel cord layer." The carcass cords are primarily composed of nylon, polyester, and other fiber materials, with steel cords used only in the cord layer to enhance tread rigidity.

This structure balances lightweight design with basic strength, resulting in a relatively thin and flexible sidewall that helps absorb road impacts. In contrast, all-steel radial tires use steel cord as the skeleton material for both the carcass and belt layers, resulting in a more robust overall structure.

The thicker, more rigid sidewalls show almost no indentation when pressed, and the weight is significantly greater than that of semi-steel radial tires of the same size. They can also be quickly distinguished by the sidewall markings: semi-steel radial tires are usually marked "PCR," while all-steel radial tires are marked "STEEL BELTED" or "TBR."

In terms of performance, each has its strengths. Semi-steel radial tires, due to their lightweight design, have lower rolling resistance, helping to reduce fuel consumption; at the same time, the fiber carcass has good shock absorption performance, resulting in less road noise and superior comfort. The tread often uses longitudinal patterns, providing strong water drainage and higher safety in rainy weather, making them very suitable for urban road conditions.

However, their load-bearing capacity and wear resistance are relatively limited, making them unsuitable for long-term heavy-duty use. All-steel radial tires, on the other hand, are characterized by high strength and excellent wear resistance, strong puncture and impact resistance, and outstanding load-bearing capacity, making them suitable for harsh road conditions and heavy-duty transportation needs.

The deeper tread pattern and larger contact patch of the radial tire result in better high-speed stability and a reduction in fuel consumption of approximately 3%, aligning with the trend towards green transportation. However, its rigid structure makes it less comfortable and quieter than semi-steel radial tires.

In terms of application scenarios, the two types are highly compatible in terms of classification and performance. Semi-steel radial tires are mainly suitable for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, such as sedans, SUVs, MPVs, pickup trucks, and light trucks with blue license plates, and are currently the mainstream choice for family and urban commuter vehicles.

In recent years, with the development of new energy vehicles, dedicated models with low rolling resistance and high load capacity have also been launched to meet the needs of pure electric and hybrid vehicles. 

All-steel radial tires are widely used in heavy commercial vehicles, including large trucks, buses, and construction vehicles, and are particularly suitable for heavy-load and complex working conditions such as long-distance logistics, mining, and infrastructure construction, making them an important component for ensuring transportation efficiency and driving safety.

From the current industry perspective, both categories are in a stage of steady development. In 2025, the Chinese radial tire market is projected to exceed 130 billion yuan, with semi-steel radial tires accounting for approximately 22% and all-steel radial tires accounting for approximately 78%. Benefiting from the continued recovery of the logistics industry, the market share of all-steel radial tires is steadily expanding.

Currently, the industry is accelerating its transformation towards green and intelligent manufacturing. The penetration rate of intelligent production lines for semi-steel radial tires has reached 70%; all-steel radial tires are making continuous breakthroughs in material innovation and intelligent monitoring technology, with some products embedding sensors that can monitor tire pressure and wear status in real time, significantly improving safety.

In short, there is no inherent superiority of semi-steel radial tires over all-steel radial tires; the key lies in the appropriate application scenario. For household use and urban commuting, semi-steel radial tires are preferable, balancing comfort and economy.

For heavy-duty transportation and complex working conditions, all-steel radial tires should be chosen to ensure load-bearing capacity and durability. Choosing the right tire type not only improves the driving experience but also helps ensure driving safety and operational efficiency.
