Noise-Reducing Tires: Essential for EV Comfort

As consumers increasingly demand higher levels of driving comfort, tire noise reduction is becoming a crucial consideration when choosing tires. This demand is particularly pronounced in recent years with the rapid popularization of new energy vehicles.

Unlike traditional gasoline vehicles, new energy vehicle motors operate with extremely low noise, making previously masked tire noise more prominent and a major source of noise pollution within the vehicle. Data shows that by 2026, the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in my country will exceed 40%, and changes in market structure are accelerating the evolution of tire technology towards quieter operation. Under this trend, noise-reducing tires, with their significant noise reduction effect, are gradually becoming the preferred choice for many car owners.

Noise-reducing tires are not a recent technology. Their core lies in attaching a layer of polyurethane foam inside the tire to absorb cavity noise generated during driving. This seemingly simple structure is actually a sophisticated system engineering project involving precise design and material optimization.

Reputable manufacturers use open-cell polyurethane foam materials, which possess excellent heat resistance and anti-aging properties, remaining stable even at temperatures exceeding 70°C during tire rolling and adhering firmly to the inner sidewall over the long term.

In contrast, the sponges installed by some small workshops not only have limited sound absorption effects but also pose risks such as softening and detachment at high temperatures, and even affecting the structural stability of the tire, thus creating certain safety hazards.

The formation mechanism of tire noise is quite complex, mainly including three categories: tread pumping noise, cavity resonance noise, and vibration noise. Pumping noise originates from the popping sound generated by the compression of air by the tread blocks during rolling, and its intensity is closely related to the design of the tread grooves.

Cavity resonance noise is the low-frequency rumbling sound formed by the compression and expansion of air inside the tire during rolling; this is the type of noise that sound-absorbing cotton technology primarily targets.

The noise reduction mechanism of sound-absorbing cotton tires can be summarized as a dual approach of "active optimization + passive absorption." On the one hand, by optimizing the tread pattern structure, such as using a multi-pitch design, noise energy is dispersed, reducing the intensity of pumping noise. On the other hand, the sound-absorbing cotton attached to the inner side of the tire acts as a highly efficient sound-absorbing barrier.

Through its dense microporous structure, it converts the sound energy of cavity resonance and some vibration into weak heat energy for dissipation, thereby achieving effective noise reduction. Actual measurements show that high-quality noise-reducing tires can reduce in-car noise by 3 to 5 decibels, with a more pronounced effect at high speeds, significantly improving the comfort of long-distance driving.

In recent years, with continuous breakthroughs in domestic tire technology, noise-reducing tires have achieved a significant leap in overall performance. The past industry challenge of achieving both quietness and wear resistance, as well as low rolling resistance, is gradually being solved.

In 2026, several domestic tire brands introduced new formulas such as high-silica elastomers and nanocomposite materials, combined with optimized structural design, to significantly improve tire wear resistance and rolling resistance while ensuring noise reduction, better meeting the needs of new energy vehicles for lightweighting and extended range.

Compared to foreign brands, domestic noise-reducing tires have a certain advantage in terms of cost-effectiveness, and their market share in the new car original equipment market has increased from 25% in 2023 to 35%, with more and more mainstream new energy vehicles being equipped with these tires from the factory.

It is worth noting that the actual performance of noise-reducing tires is also affected by usage conditions. Rough road surfaces exacerbate tire friction noise; the faster the vehicle speed, the higher the noise intensity; abnormal tire pressure can also affect the contact patch, thus interfering with the noise reduction effect and accelerating tire wear. Therefore, car owners should regularly check tire pressure and avoid driving on rough roads for extended periods to fully utilize the performance advantages of sound-absorbing tires.
